Quick Review: Afrodite Superstar

Candida Royalle has been making erotic movies for women since 1984 (and if you want more information, check out this page which has all her films). In the last couple of years she's decided to assist other women to make porn, and she's also decided to launch an ethnically diverse line of movies called Femme Chocolat.

The first of these films is Afrodite Superstar, directed by African American art school graduate Venus Hottentot. It's about a young woman who embarks on a career in rap... and falls for her hunky producer. On the way she tries to mould herself into the perfect gangsta star but in the end, she embraces her true self.

I have to say, this film is amazing. It feels like a normal mainstream film, but with hot sex added. The acting is impressive - probably because all the adult stars took acting lessons especially. Female star Simone Valentino has real talent and she's also very beautiful. The final scene between her and Mr Marcus is stunning and very erotic. Apparently they kept having sex after the cameras stopped rolling.

So much "ebony" porn (that is, porn featuring black people) is racist and offensive, with a constant focus on "ho's" and "booty". Afrodite Superstar rejects that world view and instead offers positive depiction of women of color.

Oh, and even though I really don't like rap music, I found it to be an interesting and enjoyable film. I recommend it.
